Rightly considered to be the most magnificent and beautiful gorge in Europe, which is why it has been honoured three times with a "Α Class" diploma by the Council of Europe (1980, 1984, 1989) for the purity of its natural environment. Situated 43 km south of Chania, it is 18 km long. The entrance is on the mountain Lefka Ori at the village Omalos. From 1962 it has been declared a protected "National Park" and passage through is allowed from Μay to October. There is a little river and a few springs with drinkable cool water all year round. Its impressive, wild, pure naturalness with unsurpassed views, show the immeasurable variations of nature on your journey into the gorge and provokes a feeling of awe and the sentiment of your own insignificance before the grandeur of nature! It takes approximately 6 hours to walk through the gorge. Your reward is a beautiful beach by the seaside village of Agia Roumeli where you will find many places to rest or enjoy a good meal.

There is daily a guided tour to the Samaria Gorge, leaving at 05:30 from Summer Lodge. An air conditioned coach takes you to Omalos, the starting point of the trekking. At the end of the gorge at Agia Roumeli, you get the boat either to Sougia or Sfakia, from where the same bus takes you back to Summer Lodge at 20:00.
