A long sandy, clean beach which is voted every year as one of the 5 best beaches over Greece. Very close to Georgioupolis village is the lake Kournas. There are also pedals or canoes available for hire. The best well-known beaches located on the south coast include: At Hora Sfakion is a little pebbly beach behind the village, not ideal for swimming compared with the rest of the beaches in Crete, but with crystal clear water. Agia Roumeli This is the beach at the ending of Samaria Gorge. A long sandy & pebbly beach with deep water which is possibly the hottest and sunniest place in Crete. At Sougia is a long sandy & pebbly beach relatively quiet by the little fishing village where basic facilities are available.

Paleohora is the most organized and popular beach on the south coast. There are also many small beaches especially on the west side of the village, which is a popular resort with restaurants, taverns and bars. Small boats provide tour to other beaches like Sfakia, Sougia, Loutro and Elafonissi.Frangokastelo is another long stretch of dazzling and isolated sand, lying off the southern coast. The biggest Venetian castle on the island is in walking distance together with a choice of restaurants and bars. Elafonissi is a true paradise. You will be amazed by the colour of the water and the sand. Actually Elafonisi is a small islet connected to the beach with a shallow reef that allows crossing when it is calm. There are only a couple of cantinas on the beach.
